would it be possible to only use jquery without using asp.net ajax framework and how?

 would it be possible to only use jquery without using asp.net ajax framework and how?
 
here's one and properly only functionality i need: calling a webservice from client side and return data as json format... so can this be done without using ajax framework but jquery instead? cuz not many web host supports ajax framework.
