I recently did a clean install of sql express 2008 r2 and visual studio 2010. When I try to open an mdf database in vs2010 or connect to .\SQLEXPRESS in management studio, I get an error saying that no connection can be made.
When I open configuration manager, it doesn't show SQLEXPRESS listed at all.

However, when I run the installation manager, it clearly shows SQLEXPRESS listed as an installed instance.

But, as you can see, it isn't listed in the existing instances drop down.
When I choose to upgrade existing instances, it does show up as an instance that can be upgraded. However, when I try to upgrade it, it fails due to the following errors.
