Problem installing SQL 2012 express on wndows 8

I am installing SQL 2012 Express in Windows 8 64 bit. I already have a full version of SQL 2008 installed on this machine. I need SQL Express 2012 as two web based projects I am currently working on require ./SQLEXPRESS access. When I try to install the 64 bit version of SQL server 2012 express (SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe or SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe ) the installation never goes past the last step "installing files". This installer is most annoying as it does not show progression  through the install (just a animated activity bar at the top which is not helpful), so you do not know whether or not it has hung. Please advise...
