Is this a good stepping stone to self teaching?

I am graduate student in a totaly different program than computer science. However, I have fallen in love with coding and want to master web and mobile development. There are so many resources that i have a hard time pinpointing a good way to start. I am decent in HTML and CSS and have a wide undertanding of computer science in general (to a limited degree). Could you guys share any good advice you'd have for someone like me? like a useful first language to learn, good beginner projects etc.
PS: I am taking tutorials with microsoft and using webmatrix.
