Date.getTimne()

I am not sure if I can get an answer here for ColdFusion 9.
What does Date.getTime() return? Does it return miliseconds starts from the day of beinging of the yeaar?
for example 02/26/2014. If date = '02/26/2014' then what  does Date.getTime() return?
