Updating Record with dropdownlist in formview editItemTemplate mode

I have a dropdownList in the EditItemTemplate, Mode when i choose from the dropdownlist and click update it never replace the previous value in the database column.
How can i Update the column such that any item selected from the dropdownlist will replace the previous value in the database
