Showing loading animation while executing code

Hi,
I've currently got a page with information regarding various different VoIP devices, there's also a button which when clicked retrieves some live information from the device. As this can be quite slow with a large amount of devices. I was wondering is there a way of being able to show a loading GIF while the code is executing then once the sub has finished hide it again?
