I am building a new web app from the ground up and curious to know what people recommend in handling membership, authentication, etc!

I haven't used the membership, roles, etc. of .net in the past but am creating a brand new app and considering it. Before I do, I was curious of others recommendations.  I need flexibility in communicating with the membership database such as the login ID.
