Master Pages in SharePoint

Hi all...
I just have a small doubt in customizing the Master Pages in SharePoint 2010.

While creating the Subsites in SharePoint the Master Page Library has three default master pages, and by default it uses the v4.master. So, if i need to customize my subsite's master page, should i have to create a copy of the v4.master in my root and then customize it or can i pick the MasterPage from my subsites's master page gallery!

And, moreover i too have another doubt that, "should we do all the changes at the root site?".....

Because, setting up a master page option for a subsite shows the customized master page only if we create it in the root...
